Be Intentional About Who You Learn From

Glowing footprints in a dark path
As educators, we often think that growth comes from following as many mentors as possible, attending every training, or consuming every piece of advice we can find.

But the truth that isn’t spoken enough: not all mentors help you grow...they can sometimes hinder it!

Some mentors may unconsciously take the shine for your successes, claim credit for your progress, or impose their ideas in ways that leave you questioning yourself.

Early in your career, or even later, this can chip away at your confidence and make it harder to trust your own instincts.

Follow Those Who Look Like Where You’re Going

It’s important to follow mentors who inspire you without threatening your independence.

Look for those who model what you want to achieve, not just the loudest voices on social media.

You don’t need a dozen mentors with conflicting philosophies. Too many perspectives can confuse you, especially when you’re still figuring out your path.

Protect Your Agency and Confidence

A true mentor guides, supports, and celebrates your growth without attaching their ego to it. They allow you to shine while offering wisdom that elevates your journey.

Protect your space to make decisions, experiment, and sometimes even fail.

Your growth should be yours first, not a reflection of someone else’s guidance.

Be Selective, Be Mindful

Take time to identify mentors who:

🔶Inspire you and align with your vision.

🔶Celebrate your wins as yours, not theirs.

🔶Support you quietly, without needing public acknowledgment.

It’s okay to seek guidance from people who aren’t paid to mentor you. Paid programs can be helpful too. The key is to remain mindful of your confidence and independence.

Reflection: Ask Yourself the Right Questions

When seeking mentorship, ask yourself:

🔶Does this person inspire me without taking away my voice?

🔶Do they support my journey without trying to control it?

🔶Will learning from them help me grow, or will it make me doubt myself?

If the answer isn’t a clear yes, it might be worth reconsidering your mentorship choices.

Step Boldly in Your Own Lane

Be intentional about your growth.

Follow educators who look like where you want to go.

Protect your confidence. Nurture your independence. Allow yourself to shine fully, unapologetically, at your own pace.

Every small step you take, every milestone you achieve, is part of your unique journey.

By being selective and mindful, you ensure that mentorship becomes a bridge to your growth, not a weight that holds you back.

Step boldly. Grow intentionally. Shine. Share this with other Educators
